The point here is, none of the great rock drummers could play like her just as she couldn’t play like them. Not one would have the discipline and restraint to only play the notes that needed playing and for the good of the song. That doesn’t make her playing inferior to other drummers, just different. Kenny Jones was a far more technical drummer than Moon, but The Who were a shadow of themselves without him.

Lars has always been terrible, that is why people have always disliked Metallica. People need to get real. There’s been many sessions where the band has to stop the session because Lars can’t keep time with the rest of the band. Age has nothing to do with it. Yes, a lot of drummers wear wrestling shoes. Because they create no sound when you walk.

We are on the same plain totally! I’m sick of drummers with highly choreographed parts constantly out on display! Improv is being lost. Jazz drummers are the true great improvisers. We need to listen to greats like Jack dejohnette and Art Blakey, Elvin jones etc and learn to translate ideas into parts made up in the heat of the moment. I try to get my students to do this make your own phrases up on the spot. Most fail sadly. Thanks Steve for your brilliance short but great video!! ❤️

Interesting take. You are right that we have way more free resources now to educate ourselves for free to low cost which is leading to drummer’s developing faster. But my dude I feel like we are the same age or close and we had way more places to stretch and hone improv skills without being documented. Their is way more of a fear of failing for a younger musician when there is a comment section. I’m not disrespecting your opinion I’m just saying we didn’t have to worry about a lot of our rough gigs being searchable on UA-cam or instagram out of your control. Also on a different note, our gen didn’t invent Beat detective and auto tune but we leaned on it pretty heavy since the 00’s but that’s another tangent. Have a good day and keep making videos.

The crowd is dr. and lawyers that are musicians and can afford the show. They sit and watch, externalizing every note...they wish deep down that this is what they would've done instead.

I really got a kick out of this! The "break down" section is just a rip off of Zappa's cosmic debris. It's like, look at me...I've spent hours and hours doing the same chops and style until I mastered the ins and outs so much so that it has been stripped of all feeling and only the mechanics are left.

Dave Weckl is a really good drummer, although way too clean for my liking. There is no edge whatsoever to him, musically speaking. His playing sounds like it's coming from a book he read last night. If only he could write his own book, in terms of his own musical personality, you know? He just sounds like all the people whose music he likes. The music in this video is what i call filler music, or fluff music. Filler music is made by very educated musicians, who end up making a living, playing extremely conventional music, like we hear in this video. They mostly end up playing just syncopated 4/4 anyway. They all have their careers, and in the end, they'll end up with syncopated 4/4. High musical education always produces certain types of players. To me, that is extremely suspicious. Conformity kills the art.

Not sure where or when, but I read an interview with one of the Meshuggah guys where they were talking about how the Bars we usually adding up to 16, so you might have a bar of 9 beats then a bar of 7. I've never played in a metal band - just not how it's panned out for me, but I do <3 metal - but, I do enjoy riffs in "weird" time sigs + it's a nice + easy approach to teach stuff to the idiiot guitarist ;) any musician can count a 3 and a 4, so you just get them to divide the riff into what they can count - bingo, they're playing in 7/4 or 7/8 etc. Even mostly playing in indie bands + mostly being a metalhead myself, I've never met a drummer who's not jaw-dropped at this dude.

You should really make a video about Greg Saunier from Deerhoof I'm surprised you haven't done that yet. Love this video by the way you have an openness and an enthusiasm with music that is really fun to watch.
